Unicellular or colonial ulvophyceans live in marine. The chloroplast genome sequence is reported for Oltmannsiellopsis viridis (NIES-360) (Pombert et al. 2006, BMC Biol. 4: 3).

The Oltmannsiellopsidales is flagellate (Oltmannsiellopsis) or coccoid. The flagellate species are unicellular or characteristically colonial. Sessil species are unicellular or palmelloid colonyBThe anterior tip of the flagellate cell is depressed from which four flagella emerges. The basal bodies are arranged in the characteristic zigzag pattern.
