Concept of this Web page

concept1 Humans are one species of primates

Many people would like to think of human beings as exceptional creatures. However, human beings are one of the species of primates. The lives of humans and other primates have the same values. As you access this Web page, you should keep in mind that humans are one of the species of primates. This is an important point for understanding biodiversity.

concept2 individuality

The primate research of Kyoto University is always conducted at the individual level. You can easily understand our policy if you come along for fieldwork with us. When we visit a wild monkey field, we start by distinguishing each individual by watching them as the first step. Sometimes we spend several years to make a database for each individual. This is very important for conducting primate research. We believe that such a standpoint, in which we recognize primates as our fellows, is indispensable for investigating the personality of not only primates, but alsoincluding human beings. Therefore, we constructed our database at an individual level. We hope general readers will try to distinguish each chimpanzee by themselves and enjoy seeing the database at the individual level.

concept3 from genome to field

To understand the evolution of primates, including human beings, requires not only fieldwork but also laboratory experiments. Sometimes the results seem to conflict with each other and thus we should combine different approaches and integrate them, including genomic studies. Thus, we constructed this web page to let users be able to enjoy the atmospheres of both fieldwork and laboratory experiments. We hope that it will help you form a new image of primates.
