Information
This mutation was obtained by chemical mutagenesis (ENU; N-ethyl N-nitrosourea) screening and identified as a novel one, kanazutsi (kzt).

Zygotic homozygous mutants are embryonic lethal. Homozygotes suffer from a variety of morphological defects, such as head flattening, pericardial edema, circulation defects, disrupted patterns of melanophore distribution, dwarf eyes, a defective jaw, and extensive apoptosis in the head, which indicates that the main affected tissues are derived from neural crest cells. The closely linked gene is cytoglobin 1, which is significantly downregulated in kzt homozygotes.
