Wheat Taxonomy

Wheat Taxonomy

Classification of Triticum according to Kimber & Sears 1987, with nomenclatural corrections.

The Kimber & Sears (1987) [reference] genomic classification treats all the wheats as one large genus, Triticum sensu lato. This current genomic concept for wheat taxonomy has its roots in the 1959 Triticum classification of Bowden [reference] and a subsequent revision by Morris & Sears (1967) [reference]. As presented here, the Kimber & Sears treatment incorporates changes made by Kimber & Feldman (1987) and corrects nomenclatural errors. Researchers who follow this genomic concept of the wheats should note that several species names are not validly published. Citations for the Kimber & Sears [reference] classification should also include the reference to Kimber & Feldman (1987).
