II. Registration of new gene symbols

In accordance with the new rule, 7, the following gene symbols were registered after an examination for priority and validity, with the assistance of coordinators for respective traits.

Information on the new genes is presented as follows:

GENE SYMBOL REGISTRATION No. 1

Registrant: Masahiko Maekawa (Fac. Agr. Hokkaido University)

Gene symbol: z-6

Gene name: zebra-6

Character expression: Irregularly spaced yellowish crossbands are kept on leaf blade and sheath through growing period.

Name of original line: AC-100 (progeny derived from the plant which were regenerated by anther culture of F1 plant of the cross, H-50 x N-71.

Gene locus: Linkage group IV

Remark: F2 segregation and linkage data are reported.

GENE SYMBOL REGISTRATION No. 2

Registrant: Itsuro Takamure and Toshiro Kinoshita (Fac. Agr. Hokkaido University)

Gene symbol: lk-i

Gene name: 'IRAT 13' long grain

Character expression: Longer grain than that of Fusayoshi (Lk-f) and expressed as a recessive character.

Name of original line: IRAT 13

Remark: Data on F2 segregations and F3 progeny tests showing an independent relation with Lf-k are reported.

Gene name: low amylose endosperm

Character expression: Low amylose content in translucent rice grain.

Name of original line: SM- I

Origin: Mutant induced by gamma rays from Shiokari

Gene locus: Linkage group IV, close to I-Bf

Remark: Data on F2 segregation and F3 progeny tests are reported. Tentative symbol (t) was added because its relation with dull genes remains unknown.

Character expression: High amylose content (> 30%) in white-cored grain.

Origin: Mutants induced by the gamma rays from T-214 X K114, respectively.

Remark: Data on F2 segregation are reported. Tentative symbol (t) was added because of the need for allelism tests with Wxa and ae-1.

Gene name: open hull male sterile

Character expression: Complete pollen sterility, lower seed fertility (5-20%), smaller caryopsis, darker leaf color and remarkable ratooning.

Origin: Mutant induced by a treatment of fertilized egg cells with N-methyl-N-nitrosourea from Kinmaze.

Remark (common to No. 7, 8 and 9): Data on F2 segregation and trisomic analysis are report- ed. Independent relations among esp- 1, esp-2 and esp-3 were confirmed.
