This is a fifth instar larva which is bred on cherry blossom leaves. First to third instar larvae are mostly black but after entering the fourth instar, they become greener. After the fifth molt, the dorsal part is light green while the ventral part is green. This phenomenon where the body color changes according to the instar is commonly known in Swallowtail butterfly larvae. In this case, the fifth instar Rhodinia fugax larva seems to be adjusting to the color difference of the surface and underside of a leave. The fifth instar larva will squeak when it is touched.
