During the Kyoto University Scientific Expedition to the Karakoram and
Hindukush in 1955, we found Aegilops spikelets mixed in chicken
feed in a down town shop in Tabriz, Iran, which drew our special interest.
We bought a sample of 350 grams which was classified on morphological
investigations as follows:
Aegilops crassa . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 15 spikelets
Aegilops squarrosa . . . . . . . . . . . . 31 spikelets
Aegilops triuncialis . . . . . . . . . . . 17 spikelets
Aegilops cylindrica . . . . . . . . . . . . 52 spikelets
Wheat . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 8,441 grains
Barley . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1,231 grains
Weed seeds . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . over 85 species
It is noteworthy that the sample contained all the species of Aegilops,
except Ae. columnaris, collected around Tabriz.
