Aegilops squarrosa strains collected in Pakistan, Afghanistan and
Iran during the Kyoto University Scientific Expedition to the Karakoram
and Hindukush in 1955 have been studied morphologically and physiologically
in the experimental fields and laboratories of Kyoto and Misima in 1956
and 1957. Various variations in their characters have been found as listed
in the following table.

From the data listed in the table, it is clear that the variations are
accumulated in Iran, especially in the Elburz region. Hence Iran is considered
to be the centre of diversity of Aegilops squarrosa.
